In an effort to clarify.... Flash Fiction Anthology — Rules, Submissions, Rights & Other Information

Basic Rules

  • Stories should be 300–500 words.
  • A little over or under isn’t going to make me lose my mind.
  • Every two months, I post a new list of words to choose from.
  • Pick one word, five words, ten words, twenty words, or all of them. How many you use is entirely up to you.
  • The word is a prompt, as well as the title of your story.
  • Keep stories around PG-13-ish... lol. Basically, no real swear words that a 12- or 13-year-old wouldn’t have already heard—or said in front of their parents in the 1960–70s.

Pen names are welcome.

  • Please provide a short bio to be included in the back so readers can get to know you and your work better.

Where Are the Current Word Lists?

  • Current word lists are posted in both places:

Website: https://www.beadragonia.com/daily-word.html

Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1497796707906069 — look for the pinned post.

Must All Submissions Be Unpublished Work?

  • NO.
    • Submissions do not have to be previously unpublished work.
    • If you want to put your story in an anthology, it’s YOUR story. You own it. You have every right to put it wherever you choose. I’m not keeping it. I’m not charging rent. It’s yours—before, now, and always.

See the Copyright & Rights section below for the official copyright information.

Continuing Stories

  • Yes, you can continue a story from one anthology to another.
  • Each part should still fit within the 300–500-word range, or close to it.
  • If your story refuses to cooperate—and characters have been known to do that—choose another word from the list and continue it there.
  • Examples can be found under author Lord David Howlett-Steward in the Anthology Collections.

More Than Flash Fiction

  • We also accept poetry and other creative work that fits the theme.
  • Artists are welcome too. Black-and-white artwork is easiest. Full-color printing makes the books considerably more expensive, but I’m not completely ruling color out.

What Happens to Your Story?

  • Submissions are collected, lightly edited for spelling and punctuation only, formatted with a small image above each story, and published together as an anthology on Amazon.
  • Your words stay your words. I do not rewrite your story.
  • See the actual examples from the anthologies attached.
  • Two people can choose the same word/prompt. As you can see with APPARITION, the same prompt can become two completely different stories.

Is There a Submission Fee?

  • NO. There is no fee to submit.

Is There Compensation?

  • No, there is currently no compensation.
    • If I ever sold over two copies, I might consider compensation. Honestly, $3.00 for two months of work... I think I deserve it. Sorry.

How to Submit

  • If you have trouble with one method, please use another.
